Opening Reception: Saturday, October 30, 1-4 pm Sophie Jodoin in attendance
Newzones is pleased to announce Sophie Jodoin's upcoming solo exhibition, "The Cherished Ones", opening Saturday, October 30.
"The Cherished Ones" looks at young girls with pets, dolls and plush animals. Ambiguous micro-stories are set upon a pink and red-stained background, where girls cradle, protect, dominate, or bully their cherished companions. They stand quietly, trapping their toys and mute pets in embraces, games and improbable stories.
"The Cherished Ones" explores the complex and twisted relationships between a young girl and her 'best friend'. It probes the role of childhood companions of pets and objects enhanced by imagination in the evolution of a girl's aspirations, fears, aloofness or rejection of adulthood.
Born in Montreal in 1965, Sophie Jodoin received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Concordia University in 1988 and then studied anatomy at the New York Academy of Art. Sophie was one of the few artists selected to represent Montreal for "Made in Canada: Contemporary Art in Montreal", an exhibition at the Plattsburgh State University Museum in New York.
Sophie's work has been widely exhibited across Canada, the United States and Europe in both group and solo shows. Her work can be found in both private and public collections throughout North America and Europe. Sophie Jodoin currently resides and works in the Montreal area.
