Opening Reception: Saturday, May 14, 2016 from 2-4 PM

Newzones is pleased to present "A CATALOGUE OF ARTIFICIAL SENTIMENTS", a solo exhibition by Sophie Jodoin.

Jodoin's new series, "A CATALOGUE OF ARTIFICIAL SENTIMENTS" relates to the artist's increasing interest in working with language. Based on the book, The Art of Arranging Artificial Flowers by Lawrence Porricelli, Jodoin assembles a visual and text-based catalogue by juxtaposing circular-cut found images with factual descriptions of flowers. These newly arranged combinations question artificial representations and the idealization of sentiments.

"There is a surprisingly vast variety of artificial sentiments produced in the world today. Modeled on actual and cultivated sentiments, this exciting diversity and adaptability has created a 'new nature'. This accompanying catalogue displays only a sample of the artificial sentiments available. Most are exact duplications of their natural counterparts, although a few are interesting combinations of similar species. Look closely at the catalogue, for the reality of these artificial sentiments is breathtaking." - Lawrence Porricelli

Born in Montreal, Sophie Jodoin received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Concordia University, after which she studied anatomy for two years at the New York Academy of Art. Sophie was one of the few artists selected to represent Montreal for "Made in Canada: Contemporary Art in Montreal", an exhibition at the Plattsburgh State University Museum in New York. Sophie Jodoin recently completed an artist residency in London, UK, awarded by the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Quebec.

Jodoin's artwork have been highlighted in Canadian Art Magazine Online, Avenue, the Calgary Herald, the Globe and Mail, Preview Magazine, Border Crossings and Galleries West, to name a few. Jodoin's drawings has been widely exhibited across Canada, the USA and Europe in both solo and group exhibitions. Her work can be found in private and corporate collections throughout North America and Europe.
