Newzones is pleased to present “SPECTRUM”, a solo exhibition by Marie Lannoo.

“SPECTRUM” is an exhibition of 6 acrylic paintings on aluminum which exist together as a continuum; to the viewer, there is neither beginning nor end. Each painting is composed of varying geometric shapes that change in size and colour intensity. One colour from each painting repeats in the next, presenting continuous colour transformations throughout the exhibition space. Colour swings both ways in the spectrum. Blue for example, can be either blue/green or blue/violet, and yellow can swing to orange or green. Colour can be both inherently itself or it can take on the chroma of its neighbor on either side.

Light interacts with matter to produce colour. As light changes, so does colour, therefore adding the dimension of time. Colour is unstable and in a continuous process of coming into being because of light and time. To describe this, Lannoo uses gradations of colour from light to dark, suggesting that chroma is affected by the intensity of light and time itself.

Lannoo was born in Delhi, Ontario. She attended the University of Saskatchewan and studied painting at the Banff School of Arts as well as in Virton, Belgium. Her work has been shown in exhibitions throughout Canada and internationally. Lannoo’s artwork has been collected by the Bank of Montreal (Toronto, Phoenix, New York), Beaverbrook Art Gallery (Fredericton), Canada Council Art Bank (Ottawa) The Government of Alberta (Edmonton), Glenbow Museum (Calgary), University of Saskatchewan (Saskatoon), Government of Canada (Ottawa), Department of Foreign Affairs (Ottawa), Canadian Embassy (Hong Kong), Four Seasons Hotel (Dubai), Mendel Art Gallery (Saskatoon), and privately throughout North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
