Peter Hoffer – “Work in Progress” – 2016
Peter Hoffer – “Work in Progress”
“Work in Progress” explores the landscape in continual flux and transformation. Using clay, pigment and resin, Hoffer emphasizes the similarities, vulnerabilities and effects of accumulation, environmental influence and chance. Through the creative process, the paintings are exposed to fluctuations in humidity and temperature. This encourages the surfaces to crack and discolour, revealing the successive layers below.
The notion of impending drama looms in the paintings. The time or day or location of the ‘self’ are called into question as the viewer sees beyond the distraction of the glossed surfaces. The viewer is both the actor in the scene and becomes a player within a scenario where the trees and landscape are personified.
Though a certain level of melancholy is inherent, Hoffer considers his work to be optimistic. As moss blankets exposed rock, or a forest reclaims a battlefield, nature slowly takes back what is hers.
Peter Hoffer has a Masters of Fine Arts from Concordia University in Montréal, Québec. His paintings can be found in several prominent public, private, and corporate collections, including Cirque de Soleil, Musee des Beaux-Arts, Montreal, Royal Bank of Canada, Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery and ING New York, New York, to name a few. He currently resides in Berlin, Germany.
