Vicky Christou – “Glimpse”
Newzones is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new paintings entitled “Glimpse”, by Vicky Christou.
Vicky Christou continues to explore the material properties of paint within the form of the grid. The metaphor of the shield and veil inform the poetic interplay of these paint-constructed bas-relief works. Gridded layers of acrylic impasto suggestive of an architectural tapestry, thread throughout the top surface offering varying glimpses into the work depending on the viewer’s approach. The protected ground, enveloped by these layers, becomes an inner invisible absence.
Christou’s paintings evoke the ambiguity of what is left unseen, the intangible and emotive. Colored accumulated paint lines are seemingly cast out for a thematic search of the form, inviting an optical unity between the solidity and illusionary devices of pigment.
Born in Melbourne, Australia, Christou immigrated to Canada in 1969 and is a graduate of the Emily Carr College of Art and Design. She has been exhibited widely in Western Canada and is a regular participant in the annual East Side Culture Crawl in Vancouver.
Opening Reception: Saturday, April 26, 1-4 PM. Exhibition runs from Saturday, April 26, to Saturday, May 24.
