Newzones is pleased to announce 28 YEARS…, a group exhibition celebrating 28 years of Newzones Gallery of Contemporary Art.

June 4th, 1992. An abstract painter and a recent business graduate opened the doors of Newzones Gallery of Contemporary Art in a steel plant in Calgary’s warehouse district. The pair (mother/daughter) set out to introduce and promote Canadian artists not only in Calgary and Canada, but on the international art stage. As a result, Newzones has grown into one of North America’s leading galleries of contemporary art.

28 YEARS… will showcase how Newzones has established its position in the contemporary art world by bringing together established senior artists with mid-career and emerging artists from across Canada and the world. The cohort of artists blend together into a critically engaging exhibition of line, form, and colour. Newzones is proud to continue working to maintain Canada’s contemporary art status on the international stage, during a time of no art fairs; 28 YEARS… will be yet another example of Newzones’ expertise in the promotion of contemporary art.

Curating two exhibitions side by side, 28 YEARS… | PAPER will showcase works on paper by international artists such as Ross Bleckner, Jack Bush (1909 -1977), Alex Katz, Jaume Plensa, and Donald Sultan. Concurrently, 28 YEARS… | SUBSTRATE will demonstrate significant artworks from Michael Batty, Mark Birksted, Dianne Bos, Evelyne Brader-Frank, Dan Christensen, Vicky Christou, Franco DeFrancesca, Cathy Daley, Shayne Dark, Jonathan Forrest, Yechel Gagnon, Graham Gillmore, Bradley Harms, Peter Hoffer, Geoffrey Hunter, Joshua Jensen-Nagle, Christopher Kier, Marie Lannoo, Virginia Mak, Philippe Pallafray, William Perehudoff (1918-2013), Colleen Philippi, David Robison, Kevin Sonmor, and more.

For nearly 30 years, Newzones has showcased over 300 exhibitions that continue to educate, stimulate and inspire. Its artists have been collected by National Gallery of Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Glenbow Museum, Remai Modern, Vancouver Art Gallery, Metropolitan Museum, NYC, MOMA, NYC, Hirshhorn, WA, and Tel Aviv Museum, Israel, to name a few, as well as private collections world-wide.
