Newzones Gallery is pleased to present Canadian painter Janna Watson’s first solo exhibition with the gallery: The Heat of Blue.

The heat of blue is the warmth of sadness; from the stillness of difficulty we are often gifted momentum and passion.

With thoughtful introspection, Canadian contemporary artist Janna Watson delves into the primordial darkness and warmth of the colour blue. The artist’s purposeful clusters and gestural strokes challenge the familiar properties of colour theory and symbolism. Earthy and pearly tones that float against velvety shades of navy are emotional reflections of our physical world. Watson invites you into her landscape through expressive titles like Everything Moves on the Moon’s Pulse. She uses her abstractions to represent the invisible fields that are caught between the moon and ocean.

Speaking on her new body of work, Watson states:

Like catching rain, I have approached this series hoping to capture the paradoxical fluidity of motion made transient by time, and held by memory and emotional landscape. The layered nature of perception and expression is in the contrasting textures and colour depths of this series. My hope is that this work offers a pause at the midpoint; I’m wanting to witness the cadence of time at mid-beat; the in-between and the under the surface. This is my ethereal sort of tracking of time and movement

Janna Watson holds an honours degree in Drawing and Painting from the Ontario College of Art and Design, and since graduating has exhibited extensively across Canada and internationally in over thirty solo exhibitions. Her work is in notable public collections including those of TD Bank, CIBC, Telus, the Ritz-Carlton, ONi ONE, the Soho Metropolitan Hotel, and Saks Fifth Avenue. In 2013, she was commissioned to create an impressive, 11-foot painting for the lobby of AURA, Canada’s tallest residential building located in Toronto.

Watson’s paintings circulate regularly at international fairs, including Art Toronto, CONTEXT Art Miami, and in Seattle, where they were recently featured by Artsy in its list of “10 Works to Collect at the Seattle Art Fair.” Watson’s work has been covered by publications such as The Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, NOW Magazine, and House & Home.
