Casey McGlynn
Inspired by reoccurring symbols from his upbringing – animals, birds from his studio window, and numbers from the memorized math times tables – a stylistic shift to autobiographical mixed media became the signature mark of Casey McGlynn’s practice. The surrealist pop art style is created through the layering of personal and historical narratives, his artwork is as much about revealing the truth and expressing emotions as it is about documenting actual fact.
As a self-taught artist, Casey McGlynn’s artworks take on a surrealist pop art style. Inspired by reoccurring symbols from his upbringing – animals, birds from his studio window, and numbers from the memorized math times tables – a stylistic shift to autobiographical mixed media became the signature mark of McGlynn’s practice. Through the layering of personal and historical narratives, his artwork is as much about revealing the truth and expressing emotions as it is about documenting actual fact. His paintings reach into a wealth of historical influence and skill. Creating symphonic glyphs on rudimentary, raw quilt-like patterns, the works simultaneously evoke rural Southern quilts, early comic books, humor and raw realism.
Since 1995, McGlynn has exhibited extensively in Canada, the United States and Europe. In 2005, Casey had a retrospective of his autobiographical work at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art in Colorado. McGlynn’s works can be found in a number of private and public collections in both Canada and the US. Most recently his work was acquired for the HBC Global Art Collection in New York.
Born in Tillsonburg, Ontario, Casey McGlynn attended the Ontario College of Art and Design with a major in Interdisciplinary Studies.
